About Us

The Community Library is dedicated to providing free access to all forms of human knowledge to all people in our community, residents & visitors alike, in an open and welcoming environment.

 

Welcome to The Children's Library

We invite you to come and experience the wide array of exciting world of books, films, magazines, children's programs, and information about anything and everything, here at the Children's Library. Whatever your reading level and interests, there's sure to be something for you at the Children's Library.

Be sure to check out our regular children's programs, designed for children of various ages, taking place throughout the year. They're lots of fun, and they're free!

Are you looking for a special book? You can search the library's catalogue online.

Do you need help finding information on a certain subject, a good book, a movie, or anything else? Give us a call and we'll be happy to help.

Four computers are available for children to use in the Children's Library that can be used for fun. And, if they have homework to do, we also have a Homework Room with two additional computers, especially for them.

Children's Collections

The Children's Library houses a wide range of items for children ages 0 to 14 in a variety of formats. The materials include a juvenile non-fiction section on a broad range of subjects, including fairy tales, animals, biographies, architecture, and history. The Children's Library also houses a reference collection for in-house research. A Young Adult (YA) section in the main Library that houses materials for children ages 14 and up. The following materials make up the collection in our Children's Library:

  • Board Books
  • Easy Fiction or Picture Books (through Grade 2)
  • First Readers (Easy Readers)  - Kindergarten through Grade 4
  • Fiction or Chapter Books (Grades 3 - 7)
  • Newbery Award Winners
  • Caldecott Award Winners
  • Children's Nonfiction Books
  • Graphic Novels
  • Children's magazines

Other popular formats include educational movies on videocassette and DVD, books on cassette and CD, bookpacks (picture books accompanied by a cassette or CD), and CDs of music for kids. Specifically, you will find:

  • Children's Audio Books (books on CD and cassette)
  • Children's Audio Bookpacks (books along with cassette or CD)
  • Story Tote Learning Kits (storytime and related activities in a bag to take home)
  • DVDs
  • VHS Tapes
  • CDs

The Children's Library also offers materials in other languages. This part of the collection features reference books, fiction for ages 0 to 12, and non-fiction books. Specifically, it includes:

  • Muzzy Language sets (Levels I and II) in Spanish, French, Chinese, Italian, German, and ESL
  • Foreign Language Books in Spanish, French, Chinese, German, and other languages
  • Electronic Resources (available on the computers in the Library and from home on the Library's web site)

 

Computers

There are four computers in the Children's Library, as well as two computers for homework use only in the Homework Room. The computers offer access to the Internet as well as TumbleBooks - eBooks for eKids.

The computers are for use by children ages 12 and under. It is the expectation that parents/caregivers will assist their children when necessary and monitor their viewing on the World Wide Web. For further information, read the Library's Internet /Computer Use Policy.

 

Services for Children, Parents, and Educators

The Children's Library has a staff of 5 librarians who staff the circulation desk, plan and execute programs, and maintain the collection. The Librarians in the Children's Library are available to assist patrons in a variety of ways including book recommendations, research, homework help, and general library information. In addition to these services, the Children's Library does offer some additional specialized services.
